Suffolk's Fullest October Day Lands on Main Street, Five Days Before Peanut Fest

Suffolk's Fullest October Day Lands on Main Street, Five Days Before Peanut Fest

The 48th Annual Suffolk Peanut Fest runs October 8 through 11 at Suffolk Executive Airport, 1410 Airport Road. Most of the rest of the month's public calendar sits on a short stretch of North Main Street and Finney Avenue downtown. Saturday, October 3 packs more of it into one day than any other date this month: a parade, a farmers market, a narrated history tour, a stage matinee and an evening performance.

So the festival is one destination, and the city's October is mostly somewhere else. Here is how the month lays out.

October 3 Starts Before Sunrise Traffic

The Suffolk Peanut Fest Parade steps off at 10 a.m. Its route starts in Lakeside, follows Washington Street to North Main Street and ends at Finney Avenue. Ace Hardware, Atlantic Constructors and SKY4 WSKY TV are presenting it. Parade entries line up at Henley Place and West Washington Street and break apart at Prentis Street after reaching North Main and Finney.

That staging area is why some streets close two and a half hours before the first float moves. The Suffolk News-Herald reported today that these streets close at 7:30 a.m.:

  • Gittings Street, Causey Avenue to South Broad Street
  • Causey Avenue, Gittings Street to West Washington Street
  • Bosley Avenue, Smith Street to West Washington Street
  • South Broad Street, Smith Street to West Washington Street
  • Linden Avenue, Smith Street to West Washington Street
  • St. James Avenue, Smith Street to West Washington Street
  • Wellons Street, Jackson Street to West Washington Street
  • Henley Place, Market Street to West Washington Street

The rest of the route closes at 9 a.m. If police can't find the owner, cars parked along the route may be towed. Suffolk Public Works will put up no-parking signs on designated sections, and the city is asking drivers to allow extra time and use other routes. No public lot for parade spectators was posted in the sources we reviewed. If you live on one of those side streets, the safest plan is to move your car Friday night.

The Rest of That Saturday, Block by Block

The parade gets the most attention, but the hours around it are just as full. The Suffolk Farmers' Market runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Suffolk Visitor Center Pavilion, 524 N. Main Street, through November 21. On October 3, that puts the market on North Main Street at the same hour the parade turns onto it.

The Visitor Center's afternoon fills in too. The Historic Suffolk Narrated Bus Tour leaves 524 N. Main Street at 2 p.m., and reservations are requested. On Finney Avenue, where the parade ends, UPAC Presents: Children of Eden plays Birdsong Theater at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, 110 W. Finney Avenue, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. that day. It also has a Friday performance on October 2 at 7 p.m.

Time on Oct. 3 What Where
7:30 a.m. Staging closures begin Side streets off West Washington
9 a.m. Rest of the parade route closes; farmers market opens Route; 524 N. Main St.
10 a.m. Peanut Fest Parade Lakeside to North Main and Finney
10:30 a.m. "All About Love" book discussion Downtown Suffolk Library
1 p.m. Farmers market closes 524 N. Main St.
2 p.m. Children of Eden matinee; narrated bus tour 110 W. Finney Ave.; 524 N. Main St.
7 p.m. Children of Eden evening show 110 W. Finney Ave.

The library item is the quietest on the list. The Downtown Suffolk Library, at 325 W. Washington Street, holds its "All About Love" book discussion from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., right while the parade is on Washington Street.

For coffee between stops, there's a new option this year. Cure Coffeehouse opened a Downtown Suffolk location at 177 N. Main St., with a ribbon-cutting scheduled for August 21. WAVY reported that the Norfolk-founded cafe serves handcrafted drinks, house-made pastries and signature food items. Suffolk is its newest location, joining Norfolk, Smithfield, Portsmouth and Newport News. That puts it on North Main Street, the stretch the parade turns onto.

Then the Calendar Moves to Airport Road

Five days later, the festival takes over the airport. The 2026 festival chairman is Kate Rawls, who has volunteered with Peanut Fest for more than 15 years and chose this year's theme.

"Our roots and our daily lives are intertwined with the agricultural community and all the ways we celebrate Suffolk."

That's Rawls in the city's July 15 release. What you pay and what's open depends on the day, so the order you go in matters:

  1. Thursday, October 8, Carload Night, 4 to 10 p.m. Admission is free. All-you-can-ride carnival wristbands cost $50 per vehicle and cover up to eight people legally seated in it. One rider or eight, the price is the same.
  2. Friday, October 9, Kiddie/Senior Day. Admission is free for everyone until noon, with activities for preschoolers and older adults. After noon, general admission is $10, and kids 12 and under get in free all weekend.
  3. Saturday, October 10, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. This is the full-price day. Ride wristbands aren't sold Friday or Saturday.
  4. Sunday, October 11, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Unlimited ride wristbands are $30 per person. It's also Military Appreciation Day.

The two official sources disagree on Sunday's military pricing. The city's July release says active-duty military, retired military and first responders with valid ID get in free on Sunday. The festival's FAQ lists $5 per person for active or retired military, their dependents with proper ID, and current first responders. Check SuffolkPeanutFest.com or call Suffolk Festivals at 757-539-6751 before you go. Parking is free, but it may be on uneven concrete or grass, and the organizers recommend comfortable shoes. We didn't find a shuttle in the published festival information.

What's new at the airport this year

The city lists four additions for 2026. The first is a custom drone light show by Airloom Drone Shows, a Charlottesville company, using hundreds of GPS-guided, LED-equipped drones choreographed to music. The second is an inflatable walk-through exhibit with flowers and live butterflies, where attendants help guests feed them. The other two are the Virginia Agriculture Mobile Education Unit and an updated Fire Safety House that Suffolk Fire and Rescue uses to teach home fire escape plans.

The main stage is headlined by Chris Cagle, with Jon Langston, Virginia native Cody Christian, the Woah 90's Band and Cari Lacey of American Idol Season 23. The Daniel Jordan Band, Allen Hudson & Half Moons, Island Boy and Mashup & Cozy Conditions round out the lineup. Returning favorites include DockDogs, the Demolition Derby, the Shrimp Feast, Peanut Butter Sculpting, the Peanut Cup Auto Race, the Swamp Roar Motorcycle Rally, hot air balloons and fresh boiled peanuts.

Late October Goes Back Downtown

After the festival, the downtown calendar picks back up with smaller evening events, mostly on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts holds Outdoors at the Center at 110 W. Finney Avenue on three Fridays at 6 p.m. "Dancing Through the Decades" is October 16, The Cool Tones play October 23, and Ron Pier plays October 30. Two exhibitions close October 16: Rooted in Love, the fall show at the Suffolk Art Gallery, 118 Bosley Avenue, and the Art of Wine Dinner Series exhibit featuring Collette Mann at the Center. If either is on your list, the Friday of the first outdoor show is your last chance.

Saturday, October 24 is the second-busiest downtown date of the month. The Downtown Suffolk Library holds its Fall Fun Fest from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The Cedar Hill Cemetery Stroll leaves the Visitor Center Pavilion at 4 p.m. for a 75-minute walk. Legends of Main Street: A Suffolk Ghost Walk meets at the Visitor Center at 7 p.m. for about 90 minutes and runs again Friday, October 30. Reservations are required. The narrated bus tour has 2 p.m. departures on October 16, 24 and 30 as well.

Two North Main Street museums are open year-round. We didn't find dated October programs for either. Riddick's Folly House Museum at 510 N. Main Street offers regular guided tours during its weekly hours. Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum at 326 N. Main Street is free and open Sunday through Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, in North Suffolk

The month's new openings are in North Suffolk and along the Holland Road corridor, away from downtown. Buffalo Wild Wings GO, a takeout-focused concept separate from the city's full-service Buffalo Wild Wings, is set to open October 3 at 5893 Harbour View Blvd. in Harbour View Marketplace. Opening events include a ribbon-cutting and free wings for a year for the first 100 adult customers, according to the Suffolk News-Herald on September 28. That's the same Saturday as the parade, so North Suffolk has its own opening morning while downtown streets are closed.

Sheetz opened its first Suffolk store at 1517 Holland Road on September 22, WTKR reported, with free self-serve coffee and soda on opening day. On Bridge Road, The Fabric Shoppe and The Embroidery and Print House reopened together at 3575 Bridge Road, Unit 12, with an August 6 ribbon-cutting. They offer fabric and sewing supplies, embroidery, screen printing and personalized apparel. On Pruden Boulevard, Tailored Smoke Cigar Lounge & Restaurant at 2864 Pruden Blvd. held its ribbon-cutting in July and hosts music, bingo and karaoke nights.

Before any of that, the festival weekend opens downtown. The Peanut Fest Queen's Banquet is Thursday, October 1, at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront. Tickets are sold at Cecelia's Boutique & Gifts and the Suffolk Visitor Center.
